ProPresenter 5 & ProPresenter 6 Tutorials: Adding animated gifs to presentations

I frequent a lot of church tech groups. In one group, someone asked about adding animated gifs to presentations in ProPresenter. I thought that I’d heard of someone doing it, but hadn’t done it myself, so I decided to try it out.

[tweet “Depending on the version (ProPresenter 5 or ProPresenter 6), you’ll get different results when adding animated gifs? Find out the surprising results here:”]

I tried both ProPresenter 5 and ProPresenter 6 and expected to either be able to add it in both and have it work, have it work in pro 6, but not pro5, or have it work in neither. None of those happened.

In ProPresenter 5, you can add animated gifs as media files and set them to loop, stop, or do palindrome, as you would with video files.

In ProPresenter 6, that capability is gone. Pro6 only allows you to add animated gifs as still images. That’s what surprised me. I expected that Pro6 would get better or stay the same.

To be fair, animated gifs are resource hogs. The video file that I turned into an animated gif was only 10 seconds long and was 4.8 mb. When it became an animated gif (using Giphy.com), it swelled to 13 mb. Imagine a 5 gb movie, it would be worse quality, have no sound, and easily top 12 gb (I’m guessing).

So, if you have Pro6 and you really need a gif, I’d just convert it to a video and be done with it. You’ll have the same quality (or better if you skip the gif step) with a smaller file.
