It’s the end of the world as we know it…

Beep, beep, beep. “In Jesus name, amen.”

I looked up to see all my friends standing around in a circle still holding hands. The world had not ended.

Happy end of the world…again.

This isn’t the first time we’ve had dire predictions of the end of the world. Before the Mayan prediction, there was a prediction that the world would end on 10/21/2011, but that was after 5/21/2011 which was Harold Camping’s original prediction. I was so certain he was wrong about both that I sent him an email in April of that year offering to buy his network of radio stations for $1 on 5/22/2011. I never got a response.

Why was I so brazen? I’d lived through the end of the world before, several times actually.

Do you remember Y2K? The whole world braced for a catastrophe as computer clocks clicked over to 1/1/2000. When that happened, nothing went wrong. Everything just kept working.

That wasn’t the first “end of the world” either. People have been predicting it for a long, long time.

The story I wrote above was when I was a teen. The “end of the world” happened while I was at a youth Bible study. Someone had set his watch to beep when the prediction was supposed to happen. We were praying when it started beeping. Nothing had happened at all.

I don’t get why everyone is obsessed with the end of the world. Even Jesus said, “No one knows about that day or hour, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father.” Mark 13:32 (NIV). I’m amazed that we still try and prove Jesus wrong.

Here’s what I do know. Today people will wake up with plans of what they will do tomorrow, but they’ll die and not be able to do any of them. Most of us won’t, but a lot will. Treat every day like it is your last. One day it will be.
