Whether they’re professional pastors or volunteer teachers, people sometimes try and help by creating their sermon notes for us techies. I applaud the heart, but when you fix the same mistakes over and over again, you really want to get the word out of mistakes to avoid.

[tweet “Even if they think they’re just being ‘helpful’. Pastors sometimes make these presentation design mistakes:”]

No matter who you are, avoid these mistakes and your presentation will be so much better.

Avoid over-used and inappropriate fonts. Here, I’m thinking about Comic Sans and Papyrus, especially, but just like when desktop publishing first came into the world, people sometimes think that “a cool font” will make an otherwise so-so presentation awesome.

More often than not, the opposite happens and they use a font which distracts instead of adds to the presentation. When in doubt, use a simple san-serif font, not a gimmicky one or one that “looks so cool”. Less is more here.

Where less isn’t more is resolution. Learn the size of your display. You can get by with scaling up 10% if the image you want to use is a tad small, but it’s MUCH better to scale a large image down than a miniscule image up. If it looks good as a thumbnail on a website, it probably will look horrible when scaled up to a 1080p resolution.

Desktop monitors tend to be better than projectors, so you might create a presentation with text that is a color that’s too similar to the background you’re using. Avoid that mistake and your congregation will thank you.

There are tons of other mistakes you can make, but my advice comes down to this. Let people gifted in an area do that. Pastors need to preach and teach, but graphic designers also need to do design. It’s foolish to do it all yourself, if you don’t have to.
