Some people claim to be able to get a good shot with “available light.” While that’s possible under the right circumstances, more often than not, you want to use lighting to help. Why? Because the human eye is far more sensitive to something called “dynamic range.” What that means is that we see details in bright objects and dim objects at the same time.

To deal with poor dynamic range, you add lights so that you can control where light goes and how it affect the shot. Take a look at the video for a stark example from my studio.
